Discipline Description
Job Description
You will design, build and support data solutions using Azure, Databricks and Delta Lake. You will integrate structured and unstructured data from enterprise systems, databases, APIs and files, and translate business requirements into reliable data products, analytical models and reporting solutions.
Your work will support operational intelligence, business reporting and AI-assistants using governed data. You will also help establish the data foundations for future machine learning capabilities. You will own solutions from design through production support, improve our development practices and mentor colleagues. Data quality, access control, maintainability and cost awareness are part of how you deliver.
Key responsibilities
- Own part of the platform architecture and document design decisions. Build reusable capabilities that enable colleagues to access approved data and independently develop reports and applications.
- Design and maintain reusable batch pipelines, enterprise integrations and modular ingestion and transformation frameworks in Azure and Databricks, including API integrations. Enable new sources mainly through configuration.
- Build data models and Delta Lake tables with clear relationships, business definitions and historical data. Work with business owners on data products, ownership, metadata, cataloguing, lineage and master data.
- Lead the implementation of Unity Catalog security controls, including permissions, role-based and attribute-based access, classification tags, row filters and column masks for sensitive data.
- Implement data quality checks against source systems, establish monitoring and alerts, including freshness and missed-run checks. Enable safe recovery, repeatable pipeline runs and controlled historical reloads.
- Optimise queries, pipelines, storage and compute for performance, reliability and cost. Resolve production issues and maintain support procedures.
- Raise engineering standards through reusable design patterns, typed and tested code, constructive peer reviews and technical improvements. Review work delivered by external partners and solutions colleagues build on the platform.
- Automate testing and deployment across environments using Git, Azure DevOps and Databricks bundles.
- Clarify requirements and acceptance criteria, explain technical choices and identify platform improvements with stakeholders. Share knowledge and mentor colleagues in platform design, engineering, modelling, security and delivery.
- Prepare governed data for AI and develop future ML capabilities, including model integration with specialists as the platform foundations mature. Verify the output of AI development tools for correctness, security and suitability.
Education & Experience
- Demonstrable experience delivering and supporting production data platforms, making architectural decisions and enabling safe self-service through reusable solutions.
- Strong Python, SQL and Spark skills, with practical knowledge of SOLID principles, domain-driven design, design patterns, type annotations and automated testing.
- Strong Azure and Databricks experience, including Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, workflows, bundles, compute configuration, storage, authentication and secret management.
- Practical experience securing sensitive data, with an understanding of role-based and attribute-based access control.
- Strong data modelling and warehousing skills, with a working understanding of data governance and data management principles.
- Experience with reliable API integrations, including authentication, pagination, asynchronous processing, rate limits, retries and error handling.
- Experience with CI/CD, code review and technical mentoring. Clear communication in English, effective stakeholder collaboration and a proactive approach to problem solving in an Agile team.
- An HBO or BSc degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Useful additional experience
Experience in any one of the following areas is a plus:
- SAP, SuccessFactors, SAP Business Data Cloud or comparable enterprise source systems.
- Terraform and infrastructure as code for Azure and Databricks.
- Event-driven orchestration or orchestration based on data dependencies
- Experiment tracking, feature tables, model serving or model monitoring.
- Business glossaries, data stewardship, reference data management, and data lifecycle and retention controls.
